Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer responds to Ashley Young Inter Milan link

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has responded to speculation over Ashley Young joining Inter Milan, saying: ‘Tonight is not the time to talk about players leaving.’

Inter are reportedly in talks with United over a shock move for Young, who was not in the squad for his side’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

The 34-year-old winger turned full-back is out of contract at the end of this season, and is free to talk to clubs from abroad in the January transfer window to negotiate a summer move.

Sky Sports contributor Fabrizio Romano has said Inter are in “advanced talks” over Young, while Sky Sport Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio said the Serie A club hope to sign him this month on an 18-month deal.

However, Tuesday’s defeat to City exposed the shortcomings that still plague United’s squad, and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said the January transfer window was a time for the club to strengthen rather than losing players.

The United boss said after the game: “Tonight is not the time to talk about players leaving. We can’t weaken ourselves, we have to strengthen ourselves.”

Brandon Williams, 19, was preferred at left-back for Tuesday’s game against City, with Luke Shaw also not making the squad after his recent injury problems.

If Young were to leave the Nerazzurri he would follow in the footsteps of strikers Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, who both joined the Serie A club in the summer.

Young would offer Inter boss Antonio Conte versatility, as he can play at left-back or right-back, or own either flank. He also boasts plenty of top-level experience having had nine seasons at United since joining from Aston Villa for £16million in 2011.

United face an uphill task to overcome City in the second leg of the Carabao Cup clash, while they are currently five points off a coveted top-four spot in the Premier League, and are also targeting silverware in the Europa League and FA Cup.
