Real Madrid offered Jose Mourinho £12 million to stop him from joining Tottenham Hotspur

Jose Mourinho has won his first three games in charge of Tottenham Hotspur in what can only be considered a dream start for the Portuguese.

Mourinho was brought in to replace the sacked Mauricio Pochettino and has hit the ground running with wins over West Ham, Olympiacos and Bournemouth.

Already, Spurs’ stuttering season looks to have turned a corner as they reignite their pursuit of a coveted spot in the top four.

That is because, according to a report in The Sun, Spanish giants Real Madrid were desperate to ensure that the ‘The Special One’ didn’t sign for another top European club.

Per the report, Madrid offered their former boss a staggering £12 million to hold fire and wait for Zinedine Zidane to either leave or to simply be shown the door.

In other words, Mourinho was offered an eight-figure sum to simply sit and twiddle his thumbs while he waited for the Madrid hot seat to be vacated.

Unfortunately for the Spanish side, Mourinho just loves to manage in England and, after a series of meetings that took place with his agent and the club in October, had his heart set on Tottenham.

Other offers from the likes of Lyon, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan were not enough to tempt him out of his brief hiatus while a blockbuster £40 million per year offer from China was also shunned.

Now, Mourinho will have his eyes set on ending Spurs’ painful eleven-year trophy drought as he bids to extend his incredible record of winning silverware wherever he goes.

He will also be hoping to wrench former club Chelsea out of the top four, having closed the gap between the two clubs to six points this weekend.

The helter-skelter Christmas period could prove to be massively important in the race for the Champions League with a glut of points available.

With Spurs rejuvenated under their new boss, the table could look quite a picture for their fans come 2020.
