Cristiano Ronaldo fans mock Lionel Messi as Portugal star chases down Ali Daei goal record

Cristiano Ronaldo fans are loving that the Portuguese has scored a hat-trick against Lithuania in their Euro 2020 qualifying game.

The goal takes Ronaldo up to 97 on the all-time international scoring charts, while Lionel Messi is still on 68 with Argentina.

Ronaldo is now just 16 goals behind Iranian football legend Ali Daei, who scored 109 times for his country during his storied career.

Ronaldo is now on course for a hat-trick for Portugal tonight, and with another hour left in the game, he’s likely to get the third.

The game with Lithuania is a big one for Portugal, who are second in the Group with 14 points, behind Ukraine on 19 points.

But fans on Twitter aren’t worried about that – instead they’ve been rather quick to poke fun at Messi, who has never won a major trophy with Argentine before.

One said: “Insane goal from Ronaldo!! Brace! 97th international Goal!! Messi who???”

Another went with: “Ronaldo now has as many International goals this year alone (11) as Messi in the last 3 years combined. Siuuuuuuu.”

A third said: “MESSI FANS CRYING ON A THURSDAY NIGHT BECAUSE RONALDO IS SCORING VS LITHUANIA.”

A fourth fan wrote: “Barcelona fans are more rattled by Ronaldo than Real Madrid. It’s incredible the levels they’ll stoop to to just take a dig at him.”

This fan said: “*International goals* – Ronaldo 2019 = 12 goals. Messi 2017 + 2018 + 2019 = 11 goals. Omni-GOAT.”

Despite Ronaldo fans ribbing Messi, though, the Barcelona forward has scored more times for his club this season than the former Real Madrid man.

Messi has 8 goals in seven appearances while Ronaldo has five in 10 for Juventus, who are top of Serie A this term.

But on international duty, Ronaldo’s superiority is there for all to see. Not only has he scored more goals, but he’s won more trophies.

Ronaldo won the 2016 European Championships three years ago before picking up the inagrual UEFA Nations League earlier this year.
