The Zamzam Water sprang miraculously when Ibrahim’s son Ismael was left alone with his mother Hajar in the desert valley of Mecca and he was crying because of thirst and hunger. Hajar was running between Safa and Marwa in search of food and water to satisfy the thirst of her son Ismael. She ran for seven times between Safa and Marwa.
She saw water springing beneath the feet of Ismael, as he was rubbing his feet against the sandy earth while crying. The term “Zamzam” originated from the word “Zome zome” which means “Stop flowing”. It was said by Hajar when the water started flowing in the desert.
It is located within Masjid al-Haram, Mecca, 20m east of Holy Ka’ba. Ka’ba is the holiest place in Islam.

Zamzam is the purest form of water found on the earth. The amount of bicarbonate present in Zamzam water is (366 mg/l) higher than any other water source such as French Alps water where the amount of bicarbonate is (357mg/l).
Zamzam in a barren desert is a miracle in itself. Millions of Pilgrims quench their thirst and also take it to their home in bottles. It has been happening since 4000 years and yet there is no depletion in this water and neither any degradation in quality.

The dome over Zamzam well was first built in 771 AD by the Abbasid Caliph Al Mansur, who also tiled it with marble. The dome was rebuilt by Caliph Al Mahdi with marbles and Mosaic. Again, Caliph Al Mu’tasim restored it in 835 AD. The modern & extensive restoration took place in 1915 by Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II.

Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to take the bottles of Zamzam with him and would sprinkle the water over the ill to cure them. Zamzam water is Germicidal in nature which means the water is germ free and no germs can survive in the water. The fluorides present in the water doesn’t allow the germs to exist.
The sale of Zamzam water is illegal in UAE and can cause punishment. Saudi Arabia also bans the export of Zamzam for any commercial use. Zamzam water cannot be sold or purchased in many countries.
Prophet (PBUH)’s family used to take care of the Ka’ba as well as Zamzam well at the time of Jahilliyah. Abdul Muttalib, grandfather of Prophet (PBUH) was the caretaker of these Holy sites. Banu Hashim used to facilitate the pilgrims with Zamzam water.
